Social workers and other health care professionals are called upon to serve an ever-increasing volume of patients presenting with some form of dementia, whether due to impairments such as Alzheimer’s Disease, or due to brain injury. This course examines some of the memory care information currently available, and how we apply these theories into actual best practices. This seminar will focus on care recommendations that can make a significant difference in an individual’s quality of life: meaningful social work assessments; complementary pain management interventions and enhancing and enriching the lives of adults with dementia and family members with the use of social engagement.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, healthcare workers will be able to:
- Discuss the disease of dementia
- Identify and explain the benefits of early detection and diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease
- Recognize risk factors for cognitive impairment and review treatable causes of cognitive dysfunction
- Define normal aging/pre-clinical versus mild cognitive impairment versus dementia
- Compare and analyze the differences in pseudo-dementia, delirium, and dementia diseases
- Identify the challenges in introducing and implementing best practices.
- Identify memory care assessment strategies such as Relationship Maps, Five Wishes and Life Story Boards that social workers can implement.
