Course Description
Culture, Legacy and Diversity in Older Adult Care (Part 2 of 2)
Go to Part 1 of this course HERE
Health care organizations are tasked with the responsibility to recognize the importance of cultural competence as it relates to efficiency, quality, and equity in the delivery of older adult care. This seminar is designed to educate healthcare/longterm care professionals to deliver culturally sensitive care to an increasingly diverse patient population. Studies indicate that 35% of patients older than age 65 will be from a racial or ethnic minority group by 2050, compared with 11% in 1970. These statistics will be explored in terms of how service providers are required to continue to expand our knowledge, sensitivity, and an understanding of institutionalized practices and systems that enhance and enrich the lives of our elders.
Learning Objectives:
After completing this course, healthcare workers will be able to:
- Explain the characterization of four traits of institutional practices that are a deterrent, and four practices that honor diversity and enhance and enrich the lives of elders.
- Describe two ways to implement awareness-building in Case Management practices.
- Identify three fundamental tools that will enable the Case Manager to interact with others of diverse cultures and effectively perform their job responsibilities.
- Compare and analyze the differences in Cultural Legacy vs. Cultural Diversity, and why this is important in Case Manager support services.
- Identify 3 standards of serving seniors based on the values of cultural diversity and cultural competencies in areas of legal, case management, nursing and CMS.
