This seminar emphasizes identifying biases and healing race & age-based trauma. The seminar will focus on cultural assessments, trauma supports and awareness to validate the unique lived experiences of marginalized and elder populations and promote equitable mental health outcomes. The course is geared towards social workers, nurses, administrators and other health care professionals.
Key topics and teaching goals include:
- Deliver culturally grounded care by prioritizing racial and ageism trauma recovery, intergenerational healing, and culturally responsive behavioral-health services for minority and LGBTQIA2S+ communities.
- Define racial and agism trauma, explore elders’ impacts, and identify how historical and current systems shape behavioral-health experiences.
- Discuss barriers to access, protective factors, cultural strengths, and strategies for building trust, engagement, and affirming care relationships.
- Review identity-conscious, trauma-informed approaches that reduce harm, improve accessibility, and support culturally responsive service delivery.
