Today’s Topic:

Caring Amid Family Disconnect: A Professional Examination of Health Care Professionals Role in Supporting Estranged Families

Description:

Family estrangement affects many older adults and can create significant emotional and physical strain. When family relationships are disrupted by conflict, differing values, trauma, or long-standing patterns of disconnection, seniors may be left to manage grief, loneliness, rejection, and uncertainty without the support systems they once expected to rely on.
Social workers  and other health care professionals can help seniors navigate estrangement through compassionate assessment, counseling, referrals, advocacy, and community connections. They support resilience, guide safe reconciliation when appropriate, and help seniors find acceptance when reconnection is not possible or healthy.

Key topics and teaching goals include:

  • Identify key statistics related to the prevalence of family estrangement in elder care.
  • Describe common causes of family estrangement among older adults and their families.
  • Apply social work support strategies for elders experiencing estrangement.
  • Recognize community supports available for both elders and family members.
