Course Description

Should’ve, Could’ve, Would’ve! Core Ethical Steps for Social Workers in Decision Making

This course provides an introspective look at the fundamental questions of what we should do, what we could do and what we must do to render ethical, appropriate decisions.

Learning Objectives:

Eldercare professionals will gain a basic understanding of core principles related to ethical decision-making. Participants will be able to:

  • Explain why making ethical decisions has become even more critical in assisting elders in a variety of settings
  • Discuss Code of Professional Conduct as it applies to ethical decision-making
  • List five core values (autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, justice and fidelity) to keep one’s practice ethically healthy
  • Describe five types of unethical behaviors
  • Explain a step-by-step strategy in making ethical decisions based on what we should, could and must do
  • List steps to improve ethical decisions made under behavioral emergency and crisis conditions

About the Presenter:

Paula Barber, LSW, Clinical Social Worker, Therapist
Ms. Barber has had a private therapy practice since 2020; her therapy includes assisting elders and family members with person-centered wellness and care decisions. She served as an adjunct instructor at the Rutgers School of Management and Labor Relations (May 2017-June 2018) for a grant-funded course for community health workers. She was also a lecturer and online instructor at the Rutgers School of Social Work for a required graduate-level course (2016). Prior to that experience, Ms. Barber was a research project manager there for a study of recent discharges from a state psychiatric hospital (Jan. 2013-July 2015).
