Certified Medication Aide (CMA)
Advance your career and become a certified medication aide in the Assisted Living field!
This course, approved by the NJ Department of Health and Senior Services, meets the criteria to take the state test to be certified as an Assisted Living Facility- Certified Medication Aide.
Course focuses on administering and/ or assisting residents with self-administration of prepared instillations, treatments and insulin injections.
Three required Medication Passes will be offered.
Our course trains you in mastering the concepts and regulatory guidelines required in order to administer medications in Assisted Living communities and related entities in New Jersey.
In order to be eligible to take this course:
- Must be NJ Certified as a Certified Nursing Aide or Certified Homemaker Health Aide
- Have a current criminal background check.
- Must be 21 years of age
- Be in good standing with the Board of Nursing and the NJ DHSS
- Must complete 3 medication passes under the direction of an approved CMA RN or Pharmacist Trainer

CMA Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Question: Can CMAs administer medications in hospitals, nursing homes and Adult/Pediatric Day Care facilities?
Answer: No. In the state of New Jersey CMAs may only administer medications in Assisted Living Residences, Comprehensive Personal Care Homes, Assisted Living Programs, and Alternate Family Care Homes.
- Question: If a trainee completes the medication administration-training course but fails the statewide examination, can the examination be repeated?
Answer: The examination may be taken three times. If the trainee fails to pass the examination on the third try, the training course must be repeated. If you fail the test, Longtree & Associates LLC. will provide the course again, at a 50% discount.
- Question: Will periodic recertification in medication administration be required for CMA’s?
Answer: Yes. Every two years. Recertification requirements include 10 hours of ongoing continuing education hours. We will review this topic during the course.
